Compassionate CareDay and Home Services Ltd 01803 221420
Totnes, Devon · Monday to Friday

A good place to spend the day.

Compassionate Care, Day and Home Services Ltd is a welcoming day centre for individuals aged 65 and over. We support a wide range of care needs in a safe, nurturing and person-centred environment. Our service promotes independence, dignity and wellbeing while offering meaningful activities, social engagement and structured daily support.

We provide opportunities for socialisation, group activities, light exercise, creative sessions, cognitive stimulation and companionship — helping to reduce isolation and enhance quality of life. Each day includes a freshly prepared hot meal, or when out a satisfying and well balanced picnic, snacks, and a variety of hot and cold drinks. Transport can be arranged where required.

No appointment needed — you're very welcome to pop in for a cup of tea and a look around.

What a day looks like

No two days at our day centre are the same. Some days are spent enjoying activities, games, baking and good company at the centre, while others may include a trip out, a local visit or a gentle stroll. Each day is planned around the people attending, their interests, how they are feeling and what they would like to do. Everyone is welcome to join in as much or as little as they choose.

Arrivals

Tea, coffee and a catch-up as everyone settles in.

Morning activity

Baking, watercolours, skittles, a jigsaw or a game of draughts, with fresh fruit and a drink partway through.

Lunch at the centre

A hot meal round the table, with help at hand if it's needed.

Afternoon

Afternoons may include a quiz, games, creative activities, music or spending time in our outdoor area.

Winding down and home

We finish with a cup of tea or coffee and a slice of cake — a chance to chat about the day, talk over future activities and outings, and make sure everyone has their belongings ready before heading home.

Everyone goes home at 4pm, with a handover to family or carers. These are examples, not a fixed programme — the day is planned around who is in and how they are feeling, and nobody has to join in with anything they'd rather not.

Days out

Some days take us further afield.

Our days out may take us to Dartmoor, Broadsands Beach, Dartmouth Quayside, local riverside walks, farms, churchyards and museums. We also enjoy spending time at our smallholding, where people can meet the chickens and goats. Each trip is thoughtfully planned so that everyone feels comfortable, included and able to enjoy the day, with a balanced picnic lunch provided when we're out.

Support we offer

Come and get to know us.

We warmly invite you to pop in, meet our friendly team and have a look around the day centre to see what we're all about. You can then take an assessment form home to complete in your own time, before joining us for a trial day. It's a relaxed way for us to get to know each other and learn about the things you enjoy, your usual routines and how we can best support you.

  • Dementia support

A calm, safe and welcoming environment, with fully trained staff who understand and support people experiencing memory-related difficulties and confusion. Our day centre is comfortable and easy to find your way around.

  • Reduced mobility

Our centre has wheelchair ramps at the entrance and a fully accessible disabled toilet on the ground floor. Our activities are adapted so everyone can take part, whether you walk independently, use a walking frame or use a wheelchair. A stairlift is also available for anyone who needs support accessing the first floor, and our staff are always on hand to help.

  • Sight and hearing loss

We take a person-centred approach, adapting activities to each individual's needs and preferences so everyone feels welcome and included. Our staff follow each person's individual care plan to understand how they prefer to be approached, communicated with and supported.

  • Getting here

We offer transport within the local Totnes area to help make getting to and from the centre easier. Please speak to us about your individual transport needs, and we'll be happy to discuss how we can help.

  • Social & emotional wellbeing

Our welcoming day centre helps reduce isolation by bringing people together to enjoy good company, build friendships and take part in meaningful activities. We support each person to maintain their independence, confidence and quality of life.

  • Support for family carers

We're here to support the whole family. While your loved one enjoys a welcoming and fulfilling day with us, family carers can have time to rest, attend appointments or manage everyday commitments, with reassurance that the person they care for is safe, happy and well supported.

  • Meals and refreshments

Our day includes either a freshly prepared hot lunch or, when we're out, a satisfying and well-balanced picnic lunch, such as a traditional ploughman's. Hot and cold drinks are available throughout the day, along with snacks such as fresh fruit or cake.

  • Welfare checks

Regular check-ins on someone living alone, so you know how they are without having to wonder — peace of mind for you as much as for them.

The centre

Have a look around.

Our centre has two large, bright and welcoming rooms — one on the ground floor and another upstairs — with plenty of space to enjoy activities, socialise or relax. The building has wheelchair access, toilets on both floors and a stairlift to make moving between the two levels easier. We also have a fully accessible outdoor area for everyone to enjoy.

In their words

What guests and families tell us.

It is a wonderful place and they are very helpful. They listen and encourage you, and nothing is too much trouble. It is very relaxing and you can go at your own pace — they don't force you into anything. They will build your confidence, and all have lovely smiles. I would recommend it to all, and especially to shy and quiet individuals.

You truly make a huge difference to my family's life. Mum gets a break, I don't have to worry, and my son gets some down time too. Some days Dad says he doesn't want to go — but once he's there, he's having an absolute ball. You could not have come along at a more important time in our lives.

Who we are

Meet Jess, Michelle and Jenny.

We created Compassionate Care together with a shared vision: to offer the kind of warm, welcoming and person-centred service we would want for our own families. We bring different skills and experience to the centre, but share the same commitment to ensuring every person feels valued, included and genuinely cared about.

You'll regularly see all three of us at the centre, working alongside our friendly team and getting to know the people who spend their days with us and their families. All members of our team are carefully recruited: we follow a safer recruitment policy that includes enhanced DBS checks and references, and everyone is supported through a full induction and ongoing training.

I'm thrilled to introduce myself as part of the Compassionate Care team here in Totnes. With over eight years of experience in the care sector, I am passionate about delivering high-quality, person-centred care that promotes dignity, respect and the very best quality of life for every individual we support.

When I'm not at work I love spending time with my family, going on long walks and adventures in the beautiful Devon countryside, reading, and getting creative with arts and crafts. I'm really excited about bringing some fun arts and crafts activities into the day centre for those who enjoy being creative, while making sure there's a wide variety of other activities for everyone to enjoy.

I have twenty-two years of experience working in care, and I have always been passionate about supporting people to live with dignity, independence and companionship. Caring for others has always been incredibly important to me, and I strongly believe people should be treated how you would want your own family members to be treated. I pride myself on a warm, personable approach, and on building trusting relationships with the people I support and their families.

Compassionate Care was created with the aim of providing a friendly, welcoming environment where people feel valued, safe and supported. Outside of work I enjoy spending time with my rather large family, and on my smallholding, where I love gardening and spending time with all my animals.

I am excited to begin this new chapter working within a day centre supporting people aged 65 and over, bringing with me over ten years of experience in the NHS. Throughout my career I have developed a strong commitment to compassionate, person-centred care, always taking the time to understand each individual's needs, preferences and stories. I take pride in creating a warm, welcoming environment where people feel valued, respected and comfortable, and patience, empathy and genuine human connection are what I aim to bring to every interaction.

Outside of work I enjoy spending time with my daughter and our dog, as well as walking and reading. Walking gives me an appreciation for fresh air and gentle activity, something I enjoy encouraging in others where possible, while reading allows me to relax and continue learning in my own time.
